On Monday, January 23rd 2012, more than a billion people will celebrate the Chinese New Year. Streets will be filled with joyous patrons parading with their noiseful dragons and at Galt, we will have a small celebration of our own where you will get a Chinese Fortune Cookie if you let us pick your brain for your knowledge in books, movies, video games, etc. Don't worry, we don't want you to lose. Also, on January 30th, we will have a draw for the two calendars that you can see on the display. You might also take a look at the books on China while you are here. Also, you might be curious to learn more about the 9 sons of the Dragon or to check the compatibility chart to see with which signs you might achieve great projects!!!

We are living in an era that is devoted to the written and spoken word that travels to the speed of light to inform you of the World's greatest disasters, political uproars, celibrities hooks and fashions but, what I would like for you to think about is the revolution taking place because of the popular use of electronic devices that keep you connected at all time.Texting, twitting, facebooking, cellphoning are changing our ways of keeping in touch with our friends and loved ones but you have to remember to use it wisely. You never know who's looking at your info....

Poetry is a good way to express yourself and in the last few years, novels in verse have become very popular for some authors trying to address difficult subjects. Pick any of these books to see the different styles of poetry used.

Holidays are for sharing

Have a look outside ... What are you expecting to see at this time of the year? Snow of course though this year it is kind of minimal, just enough to remind us that we are supposed to be wearing winter clothes. We can also see houses decorated for the Holidays but I have to say that some have more taste than others. Anyway, everywhere you go these days you can hear Season's Greetings, Christmas music, people talking about parties and gifts to buys, etc.

As usual, in Galt's library, we give a little twist to the Season's Spirit with our Holiday tree. It has nothing to do with the regular green one and we like to pass on a few meaningful thoughts along the way. We chose to present you ribbons of colors attached to a few of the causes that need our support throughout the year. So, instead of giving a gift that you buy from a store, choose a color, choose a cause and get involved. Sharing "IS" what it's all about. Take a few minutes to look at the books on the table and please feel free to borrow them! We also put a list of the different meanings of the colors with their causes for you to choose from. Don't be shy and have a look around you, you are sure to find someone in pain (physically, mentally, psychologically) that often just needs a hand to help them out of a bad situation or just to feel some relief. You have the power to do it, every little gesture counts.

Reborn chairs

Our display if a pure joy for the eyes! Mrs. Gandey's art class decided to give a twist to old chairs that will then be auctioned off to raise money for the art department. You have to get a close look and I am sure you won't be able to leave without having "Ohhhhh!" or "Wow!" a few of the pieces. How can an ordinary every day object can become so beautiful? Be generous and support the Art Department in their innovative way to reach out and touch everyone's heart. The final bids to have a chance to get any of these chairs will be on Saturday, December 10th at Lennoxville Elementary School during their fair. Come between 11h30 and 14h00 and get some goodies for the Holidays.

Real stories from veterans

November is called in French: "Le mois des morts". Of course, we could talk of death with nature in mind as trees are preparing for their winter dormance but for me, November is the month to remember those who died for freedom. Yes, freedom of just being who you are without judgement of race, religion, opinion or ethnic background.
We selected books that relate stories of veterans of different wars along with the "My Story" and "Dear Canada" books that are fictions based on historical times. On the TV screen, you will be able to see different Power Point presentations prepared by Mr. Doug Newman for our benefit. And don't forget to take part in the celebrations on November 11th. Take a poppy home....

Horror is not always a fiction

As Edward Keating said: "You do not destroy an idea by killing people, you replace it by a better one." For many leaders, those words have no meaning. So many were killed because they dared to speak their mind... because they were not of the right color or religion ... because they were different. Being an homosexual in a muslim country is not a good thing, being albinos in some African regions will make you the target of murderers, being an infant girl in China might have you abandoned or killed. Lately in the news, we have heard of a couple with their son who are accused of committing an "Honour Crime". Yes, real life is sometimes worst than what we imagine.

You will find the real information on secret societies that are mentioned in many books like the Dan Brown's "Da Vinci code" or in "Angels and demons". Remember, even if a book is really great, fiction is fiction and you should check the facts before you make up your mind.

If you are fascinated by real cruel monsters in history, don't waste time and bring one of those historical biographies home

And, remember that on Halloween's day, we will have some special activities in the library. Come at lunch hour if you want to taste some eyeballs..........

Another school year just started and you are wondering what it will be like. Chances are that you changed a lot in the summer and that you made some decisions about yourself: what you would like to do in the future, who you would like to be.

Our opening display is all about that. We have put some plants that are all different but work well together to give an impression of beauty and peacefulness. I don't have a green thumb so I had to ask people around me to lend me those plants. The giant cactus, Denzel Washington, belongs to Amanda and Gab. The beautiful leafy plants are from Wendy and the little maple sapling is from Jennifer. So, I am good with people but not with plants. High school is the same. We don't have all the qualities and might not be able to perform in every classes with the same results so, don't be shy and ask around to find someone to complement you. You're good in maths but are struggling in French? Find someone who is good in French and might need help in maths. That's the buddy system and it does work.

As for the books, come to the library and check them out. If you want to know why I selected these, it will give me great pleasure to tell you.

Just a hint ... the Craig Kielburger's book is a good example of how we can change the world by getting involved. No gesture is too small, it will make a difference. You can choose what you want to do, what you want to be.

Robotics Club Extravaganza & 2011 Reading Challenge Winners

Last Friday on May 27th, the Robotics Club organized its first friendly competition that will be known as the "Robotics Club Extravaganza" in the years to come. They worked for weeks, building robots that could solve an identified problem. Mr. Verheyden and Mrs. Meagher are behind that highly creative activity. Who said that science wasn't cool? This was very interesting and should bring more kids to it next year.

We also announced and gave our Grand Prizes to this year's Reading Challenge Winners. Thanks again to our sponsors: ETFS, the Sherbrooke Rotary Club, the Brome Lake Bookstore and Spoutnik for their support. The Reading Challenge is not part of the regular school budget so we wouldn't have money to buy all those prices. This year, we had 128 students registered and, as you can see on the picture, we do give a lot of prizes (and please remember that we gave 24 bags of goodies in our weekly draws). We have something for everyone, for all levels. This year, 3,000 more books were borrowed from the library so, reading is something Galt students enjoy.

From Montreal to Boston

This week, we have the chance to display the maquettes prepared by Mrs. Lord and Mr. Poulin's French geo/history classes. You will be able to appreciate the art work displaying both Montreal and Boston cities. They really did an amazing job! It is a feast for the eyes. On the Montreal maquette, you will recognize Mount Royal with the St. Joseph's Oratory on its side, the Parc Lafontaine and the Olympic Stadium.

As for the Boston two displays, we took pictures of the overview to give you a sense of the size of the maquettes and the precision of the position of the different buildings of importance in Boston. Most students went on a class trip to Boston as part of this project and they had a great time ... from what I heard.

The artistic talent of these students is undeniable and we hope that all their future projects will make a stop in the library for all to enjoy. We are always proud to show the excellent work of Galt
students because they put in such effort and care to produce a high quality project that it would be a shame to leave it in the classrooms for only a few privileged people to see.

Make time to come to the library, it will be worth it!
Who knows? It might inspire you for your own personal undertakings and help you visualize how great it could be!

Yes, on May 3rd, do it! Wear pink to show your support on this Anti-Bullying Day. This can only stop if everyone gets involved like those two Nova Scotia students that took action to stop bullies in their school. Remember, every little gesture counts.

Also, while checking out the display in the library, have a look at Part 2 of the story tellers project. The sculptures you had a chance to admire last week are now back with their creators but, lucky for us, they left behind the "books" that will nourish your imagination.

Sculptures, Indians and Elections

There are so many things going on this week in the library I almost can't find a minute to sit down ... except to give you an update.

Mrs Gandey's Level 2 class made sculptures of clay that she put in our glass display case. The theme is "Storytellers" and they are worth the detour. They are colorful, very imaginative and unique. We are lucky to see such beautiful art at Galt.

You can also admire life size amerindians from different tribes on banners all around the main circulation area. Mrs. Lord's and Mr. Poulin's classes are responsible for this great display. They really worked hard at making it look as close to the real thing as possible. You can see fur, feathers, braids, clothes, etc.

With the elections coming in May, we had the chance to have our own voting booth provided by Elections Canada so we decided to have an election of our own. Last year, we had a little debate on whether you feel like a pancake or a couch potato. Are you more chocolate or chips and salty snacks? Do we have to flip you over to make you move or roll you down? We will prepare posters to explain your choices and we will go voting. It will be fun ... without pain ... without any gains ... So, no excuse not to participate.

Oh! I almost forgot! We received a thank you note from the T.W.L.O.H.A. Foundation for our participation in raising awareness about suicide, depression and self-mutilation. Thanks again to all students who did write LOVE on their arms ... it makes a difference.

Hello everyone,

I know I'm a little late with my posting but we had some problems with a devastating viral infection on our main computer so, here are the latest news from the library.

This week's display features the artwork of Jérémie Béliveau. He is passionate about most means of transportation but especially trains. He is so knowledgeable that even an expert working for a train company would be impressed. You might remember his Titanic display last year! For his next project, Ferrari will be the star of the show.

We also prepared our "Wall of Love" to complete our T.W.L.O.H.A. activity that took place during carnival. It was our second year and we would like to thank all participants that took the time to come to the library to decorate their arms and check the info on self-injury, depression and suicide prevention.As we did last year, we will send the pictures to the To Write Love on Her/His Arm foundation to show them that we care and that we are doing something to raise awareness throughout our student population. Remember, it is not only a girl thing ... guys also live with those problems.

Nuclear energy and world population

What will happen to the people of Japan. After the Okinawa and Iwojima atomic bombs at the end of World War II, who would have thought that Japan would be facing another decimating disaster ... a natural one this time... coupled with a technological one. Even with all the preparations and prevention, nobody ever imagined that an earthquake of that magnitude would happen and create such havoc in a country supposedly ready for anything.
Nothing was as expected. It went beyond what the professionals' worst scenarios were supposed to be like. Now, everybody talks about security, or that it was an unexpected wave from the tsunami that made things worst.

To help you understand, we selected some books on Nuclear Energy, on Earthquakes, on Tsunamis along with a new Series
"Voices for Green Choices".

On the board behind our book selection, we posted the National Geographic poster on World Population. You will find some interesting statistics on language, religion, etc. Also, to help you figure the propension of the Nuclear Power Plants on the planet, we have put up a few Radioactive symbols with the names of a few countries and the number of Nuclear plants they have or plan to build.

Who is really sure of what will happen next December 31st? With all the attention put onto the Inca calendar, how do we know what part of the information we get is for real and what belongs to the myths and fortune tellers of this world?

At Galt, we are fortunate because Mrs. Brown's classes prepared collages, art work and essays on what those students think will happen in the future. As you can see, you have your forever pessimist who is sure that the planet will explose , whatever we might do to change things. Then you have the optimist who professes that a little gesture towards changing our consumers' habits will make a huge difference in the outcome.

Take the time to read the comments and appreciate the almost poetic way of transmitting the concerns of those students. The creativity and the choice of pictures and words will give you an insight to what they feel is happening now.

Of course, your friendly library people found a few books that you might find interesting about global warming, recycling, changing our ways, etc. We have to believe that every little gesture towards bettering our World is worth its while.

T.W.L.O.H.A. 2011

The first week in February is "Suicide Awareness and Prevention Week". As we are faced with the sadness of losing one of our students in a car accident, we still have to remember that some people, even teens, suffer from depression or other mental illnesses. It is sometimes very difficult to cope with all the feelings we have bottled up inside or because we feel too much. This is another reason to take the time to talk about it. Ignoring the subject won't make it go away and the more information we can put our hands on, the more we might understand.

Next week, Winter Carnival activities will be in full swing and we are taking this opportunity to promote the To Write Love On Her/His Arm (T.W.L.O.H.A.) activity again this year.
All day on February 10th, just come to the library to check out our display and to write love on your arm or a friend's arm. Make the time to tell to the important people in your life how you feel. We will take a picture of your arm to prepare a mural in the library for all to see.

We selected a few books, either fiction or memoirs and documentaries that are up to date with the information and loaded with links to websites that could help. Always remember that we have a very good team at Student Services' office and that they are professional. They will know how to help or where to get the help you or someone you care about might need.

New Year's what? ... R E S O L U T I O N S ???

Nooooo! Not resolutions but, good-intentions-towards-getting-a-healthier-lifestyle-approach-before-the-World-comes-crumbling-down-in-2012. Thanks to the presentation prepared by Joannie Auger and Byanca Custeau, it started our reflexion on the opening display of the year. Healthy lifestyle is definitely a priority after the excesses of the Holiday Celebrations. We have a great selection of books on getting back in shape and on nutrition. We also went to the nurse's office to pick up some pamphlets and brochures about developing good eating habits and knowing what you put on your plate. The information is there for you to enjoy and use. Have a great year!

The other face of Christmas

As usual, we have prepared a Holiday Tree in the library. This year, we have the great pleasure of introducing upcoming young artists from Mrs. Gandey's class. They made masks and this was an inspiration because, with Christmas and Holidays celebrations right around the corner, we wanted to put some emphasis on "The other face of Christmas". This colorful tree has some messages around it to help you start you thinking about what is important in your life that makes it special during the Holiday Season.

It is not always easy to do things differently. I know that in my home, we have some traditions that we enjoy repeating year after year but, we have to open our minds to other ways to express our joy at being together. Instead of just spending money, we do like to spend time with each other. Sabrina Després helped us prepare this display by sharing some insights.

To help broaden your horizons, we have selected a few books from the Amazing Stories Collection that will introduce you to different ways to celebrate in different parts of Canada.If we don't see you because you leave early on your vacation, enjoy the Holidays and just try to make a difference with someone who is dear to your heart.

Remembrance 2010

At this time of the year, we always like to take the time to thank those who decide to dedicate their lives to others, and we have some special thoughts for them and their families.
On our display table, you will find some informative documents sent to us by Veterans Affairs about the involvement of our troops in the different wars. An interesting collection of "Amazing Stories" books is waiting too. You will learn more about the Canadian Army either on a battlefield or as spies. Some videos provided with the documentation will be shown on TV to help you better understand what they went through.

Also, some of you might have notice that we have a new display shelf in the entrance that will be used to promote different book collections and special items. As we are preparing for Remembrance Day, we have selected two sets of books that should interest you: the Stackpole Military History Series and the Holocaust Biographies Series.

This first Series features different battles that took place during World War II and they are very helpful to students researching specific information on those.
We have started to buy some of them to complement what you can already find on our shelves and we will continue to add to this collection of high quality.

As for the Holocaust biographies, they are jewels amongst our collection of war books. They are contemporary, well presented and you have the cruellest of men under Hitler's sharing the shelf with the most heroic, everyday people like the Scholl siblings or Oskar Schindler. Not all German were monsters in those days...

Halloween 2010

What's real, what's not... How can we tell? Halloween always brings some supernatural fantastic stories to spice our days. Let's face it, we kind of like to get scare! Of course, our sensitivity might differ from our friends and when watching a horror movie, we might be the ones to close our eyes ... just for a few seconds but, in the end, we are still looking forward to that time of the year when witches, spirits and ghosts are roaming the Earth.Pumpkin carving parties, candy shopping, costume making are fun to do. So this year, let's put our creativity to the test. Come fully disguised on Friday October 29th in the library to get some treats.Don't be afraid and come to the library to see our selection of books on mythology, legends, haunting, etc. Have your pick of urban legends!

Art in books

We have come a long way from our Super Hero presentation at the beginning of the year. Now, we would like you to pay attention to the wonderful art derived from those good stories. On our display, check out the art books from the "Lord of the Rings" movies. It is amazing to see the drawings those stage and set designers dreamed of.

Even when I read those books I wouldn't have gone that far but they did a very respectful representation of the story line. In our mercantile world, movies are now making more money with the merchandising and marketing than with the cinema's entries. Producers and investors are laughing all the way to the bank with the profits made outside the movie itself. George Lucas was the first one to catch on to this new way of getting richer with his Star Wars animation figures, spaceships, DVDs, books, etc.
Take the time to flip through the pages of the books on display. We even brought a Tekken Art Book that can show you the evolution in the design of the different characters from the first version to the latest.

Have a look at the different art books along with the jackets of the books beside them. Did you know that you can earn a living by designing those book covers?

A good story stays a good story

Do you ever wonder what happens once a book is published? If it is a good story, it might end up on your screen and, if there is a lot of action , you might end up playing it on your latest video game console. Of course, in the books, you have the freedom of your imagination because you can picture what the characters look like, how they behave, what attitude they have towards pursuing their quest. Unfortunately, in movies, you are stuck with someone's idea of how it should look and it might quite differ from the original story line. As an example, if you ever read Jodi Picoult's "My sister's keeper" and went to see the movie, you might have been disappointed because though both are great, they are two different stories. The ending is different but still a tear jerker.

And to continue with our Super Hero opening display, anybody can be a hero as Sonic's sign says. Yes, every little gesture counts and do make a difference. To leave your mark on the world, you don't need a big publicity stunt but just continuous little attentions to people around you. Even picking up a piece of paper on the floor to put it in the recycling bin counts. Don't wait! Be the Super Hero you can be!

Do you have what it takes?

First of all, Dale and I would like to welcome you back after what we hope was a great summer. Upon entering the library, besides our display, you will be able to check over 300 new books to start the new school year. Of course, more books will appear on the shelves in the upcoming weeks so, if you don't find something you like, come to us and we will do our best to help you out.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? Yes, this is the catching phrase from the classic video game Zelda. Since its debut in 1987 on the old Nintendo 8-bits system, it has quite evolved. Link, the super hero has so many things in common with you that we thought that we would point out his qualities and abilities. Who would want to start an adventure to save the Princess with only a wooden sword and shield? Link, of course, because he doesn't lack courage and he is persistent. (Remember those castles and dungeons?) He knows how to use his brain but, most importantly, he never quits.

A good video game is like a good book. If the story is good, it will stay and still maintain its popularity. I would like for you to think of great books that became movies and video games. We will talk about it later. We will try to link information on different aspects of the video game industry with movies too.

Getting through High School is like being the hero of your own quest and the prize at the end is not saving the world but getting your diploma. In a way, getting your diploma will change your world and help you get the life you deserve.

Our display will change through the next 6 weeks and we hope you will come to check it out frequently. We will also have a draw of the fabric banner of Link and of one of the posters you can see on the display.

Vacation and relaxation

Haaaaa! Finally some warm weather is showing up and it's about time. July and the first heat wave is finally hitting us. Sure, we can complain that this is way to hot to do anything but sit in the pool or at the beach and just wait for it to be over. NO WAY! Enjoy it! Get some sun vitamins to replenish your body and get ready for a new adventure. Our first display of the year should bring you some food for thought ... along with some neuronal stimulation ... and I wouldn't be surprise to see some sparkle in your eyes when you first see it. Have a great summer! Enjoy yourselves! Don't overdo it but stay active!

Reading Challenge Grand Winners

On May 28th, we had a Grand Prize giving extravaganza for the Reading Challenge. Mrs. Vanier from the Stanstead Journal, Mrs. Priest from ETSB and Mrs. Retchless, vice-principal at Galt came to congratulate our top readers along with our last participation random pick winners. Thanks to our sponsors: ETFS, Sherbrooke's Rotary Club, Brome Lake Bookstore and Spoutnik for their generous contributions. Without them, we would not have been able to reward all 132 participants. As you can see on the picture, we had a very good selection of prizes for the readers.

Mr. Béliveau, Galt's principal, gave us the beautiful Galt bags so we could fill them with surprises. Let me tell you that they were filled to the rim.

Reading Challenge, 2009-2010

This is the end of the year and I know that you are tired and wished that school was already over and done with but, there's something to brighten your last few days at Galt. The Reading Challenge for the 2009-2010 school year is now coming to its completion.

We exceeded our expectations both by the number of students registered and by the number of pages read. You might be surprise, and I mean really surprise to find out that our top readers are boys! Yes, Jacob Courtemanche and Guillaume Audit are number 1 and 2!! Who said that only girls were good readers. Of course, the "Wheel of time" Series (12 books of around 1,000 pages each) helped but they still had to read them plus a whole lot more. Our 3rd top reader for boys is Darrin Prine who suggested the Chris D'Lacey Series on dragons that has been a regular top loan at the library. Even teachers read them!

Our top readers for the girls are: Jaimie Dawson-Cloutier, Victoria Aiken and Rebecca MacMillan. Jaimie and Rebecca were in the top 3 last year as well. We will give away the prizes on Friday so, come back to see the pictures.

What to do? What to do?

Yes, the weather is crappy and some of you might have a slight case of cold indigestion. Those few warm days way back in April were just there to prove that YES, we do have a summer season in Quebec but NO, it has not yet arrived. The good thing about this cool breeze coming down from the North Pole is that it keeps our mind on the all important FINAL EXAMS. No excuses not to study or produce that A deserving essay to end the year with fireworks.
You look outside and you just don't want to get out. So, what are we going to do this summer? Where to go? What to see? What is free? Our idea is to follow the Green Dots Road. Come to the library and check those Green Dots on the display's map. We went so far as to go to the Information Tourist Bureau in Sherbrooke to pick up pamphlets, booklets, maps so you would be aware of everything going on in the Eastern Townships area. It is quite surprising to see the variety of festivals, art circuits and shows you can find within a few minutes from your home.

By the way, the other day, we had a discussion in the library about the kind of person we think we are. We divided humankind into two categories: salt and sugar. So, for the purpose of illustration, come and see what Kayla Wilson has prepared in Mrs. Blampied's art class to get us back to the very important question: are you a couch potato or a pancake?

The debate has started, look around and try to put people you know in the right category. Will you be the one to be rolled off the couch because you eat to much chips, peanuts, pretzels and salty snacks OR will you join the "flip-me-over-because-I-don't-have-enough-energy-to-get-going" pancake crowd that will indulge in double-fudge German chocolate cakes and the likes.

This week, as part of our First Nations awareness month (okay, it is a little over a month but there are so many topics to cover!!!), we decided to feature the oil, mining and water situation of Northern Canada. As mentioned before, the North has been over exploited but not under a sustainable development strategy. It is still time to do something to make things better but there isn't any more time to waste. Feel free to check the pamphlets and booklets on the display to get more detailed information.
Just North of Yellowknife, you can find 11 contaminated sites. Those sites are contaminated by acid-generating rocks (because of mining), ammonia, arsenic trioxide, cyanide, DDT, hazardous waste. Because it is way up North doesn't mean that we have to make ourselves believe that it doesn't exist or that we don't have some responsibility in finding a solution.

Nunavut and Northern Canada

To continue with our month of awareness about Canadian autochtones, we decided this week to feature our people of the North. In 2009, Nunavut celebrated its 10th anniversary. In this edition of the Canadian Geographic (January/February 2009), you will be able to read in-depth coverage of the history of this new Canadian territory.

Life in the North is not easy, far from it. Even with good resources and money, there is still so much to do. With the global warming adding to their worries, pollutions is a big problem. As you must remember, for many years, people were not very careful with their use of the territory and you might say that some of the far away places were pretty much used as dumps. Fortunately, with today environmental preoccupations, we tend to do a little better but, for the Inuits, they have to live with the consequence of years of land abuse.

We have the chance as Canadian citizens to have access to lots of free information on our government website and people from the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada sent the library documents about the situation of the First Nations people. This is an example of the documents we have received. Just look at the title: Aboriginal peoples, Fact and Fiction! I know you are curious so, come to the library to check it out.

Since we are talking books, let me present a Canadian author: Joseph Boyden. Born in Ontario, he now leaves and teaches in New Orleans (Louisiana). You might also find him hunting regularly on his frequent trips to the James Bay area, close to the Ontario sector.

As part of our First Nations month awareness, we would like for you to pay attention to a small community 100 km from Val d'Or city in Abitibi: KITCISAKIK. You may not know this but, a little over 400 people live with even less than bare essentials. If you think that the Thirld World countries are far, far away, you should revise your judgement. In Canada, you can find a community that rates amongst the poorest on the planet and they are waiting for promises to be fulfilled and for things to change and get better. They have been in the news regularly for over 15 years. When KITCISAKIK is mentioned, indignation soars ... for a few days. Then, they go back into the anonymous nothingness. They are a lively community, and they publish a bulletin to let people know what's going on. It is quite interesting!

Mr. Béliveau lent us his personnal teepee. Come to the library to check it out while browsing through the books on Native poetry, Native legends, Aboriginal Peoples: fact and fiction. Also, you will be able to listen to some autochtone music. It is very soothing and beautiful. Take this opportunity to let yourself float on those rythms.

April will be a special month at Galt's library because we will present displays featuring Canadian autochtone and First Nation people. Mrs. Paquette and Mrs. Lord French classes prepared life size Indian representations of the different tribes living in Canada. We will post the pictures on our blog in the upcoming weeks to give you a chance to see them if you don't have time to come by the library.

As part of the French classes researches and exchanges on the subject, our principal, Mr. Béliveau, who lived in Northern Quebec for many years came to the library to talk to 3 classes about is life up North. He brought pictures and memorabilia that he left in the library's glass display case for all to see. You will see sculptures, everyday tools and objects, etc.
And, while you browse through the library, vote for the best project from Mrs. Vallée's class. They have won $1,000 to make recycling bins for their class. You just have to choose the one you prefer and put your ballot in the box.

By the way, over 150 new books are on display at the moment. We have books on how to raise pigs or rabbits, biographies of famous Canadian wrestlers like Bret Hart, graphic novels and the book that everyone should read at least once in his/her lifetime: "The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" by Douglas ADAMS. We chose the edition in 5 volumes to make it easy on you.

Many forms of art

First, to complete our TWLOHA activity, we took all the pictures of your beautifully decorated arms and put them in the yellow corner of the library to create our "Wall of Love". Have a look and if you see your arm, let us know. We will put your name on it and give it to you when we take it down in a week or two.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", who hasn't heard it before? Of course, depending of your upbringing and your surroundings it might not be so easy to find that beauty when you look at a painting, a sculpture or a drawing. So many styles, too many styles! You are lucky to be at Galt because Mrs. Blampied and Mrs. Gandey have selected some great projects made by their students that will enlighten your day.

Walk through time to learn about the different art movements.

Stop by Gretchen (our mannequin) to admire the textile motif designs.

Then stroll along the stencil printings with a little detour by the picturesque poetry on the display board.
To appreciate art, you just need to take your time and let yourself feel. Don't try to over analyze it!

Titanic

When you hear the word "Titanic", you probably think of the great movie produced by James Cameron a few years ago. That movie had such success that people kept a romantic overview of the events that took place on April 15th, 1912 when the ship sank in less than three hours. The Titanic hit an iceberg, close to Newfoundland's coast. Over 1500 passengers died but there were survivors and you can read some of their stories.

With the help of Jeremie Beliveau, we prepared a Titanic display for your enjoyment. Jeremie has drawn and colored the picture you can see in the background. We also put out books that relate the chronology of the dreadful night along with movie tie-in books. If you prefer Internet, check the Canadian Encyclopedia or the Britannica's very interesting presentation.

To Write Love On Her/His Arms

First, I would like to thank everybody who took part in the TWLOHA awareness day. For a first experience, more than 100 students came to the library to have a picture taken of their arms. Raising awareness about a subject such as self-mutilation, depression, suicide and mental illness is necessary, even if it might make us feel unconfortable. Of course, Carnival and Valentine Days so close by helped make it a success but I hope that you will remember this day and that you will be participating again next year. Check for the "Wall of Love" next week. We printed all the pictures and we will do something special to send to the TWLOHA Fondation to show that at Galt, we care.

If you haven't got a chance to pass by O-203, please do it. Mr. Grossklaus's class made a very special display for the TWLOHA Day. Also, all the pictures taken of your arms will be on Galt's website, thanks to Mr. Côté. And if you need to talk to someone, remember that there are people at Student Services available. If you are too shy, you can always call the KIDS Helpline.

TWLOHA (To Write Love On Her (His) Arms)

You might think that in this day and age all subjects are treated equally because of the easy access to information via Internet. SO NOT TRUE... Being afraid of addressing a topic won't make it disappear. When you were five, the magic thought process would prevent you from being hurt by reality but now, it is irresponsible not to get the right information on those difficult subjects. You would be surprise by the number of people thinking they will jinx their karma by mentioning death, suicide or mental illness. If the words do not cross your lips, it won't happen to you.

This week, we want to bring to your attention self-mutilation and mental illness. There is a worldwide movement to have people write the word "LOVE" on their arms as an act of support for those who suffers from either. It's easy to do. On February 12th, during Carnival Day, just write the word "LOVE" on your arms. You can keep it simple or make it artfully designed. If you can take a picture, come to the library so we can put them in next weeks' blog. Everyone will know that you care, that you are willing to show and share your love.

Self-mutilation and suicide awareness weeks.

A few years ago, a friend of mine told me that she wanted to die. She didn't really want to stop living ... she just wanted to stop hurting. Sometimes, hurting is so bad that you feel that there is no way out except death. Your hurt could be physical but it could be a heartbreak, a living ache, a soul searching ache that would bring you to think that dying would free you. Reaching out might be difficult so this is why there is a Kids Help Line available for you. It is free, anonymous and non-judgemental. The books displayed in the library are informative but also, there are testimonials of teenagers who lived through difficult times. Depression is not only happening when you are an adult.

Be prepared for February 12th. Carnival Day might bring a little more than friendly competition. Check the blog next Monday for more info.

What a knight!

Ahhh! The romance of a knight in a shining armor coming to the rescue of the damsel in distress and saving the poor fellow in need!!! Well, let me tell you about the life in those days. Etiquette was not, shall we say, very mundane and proper. After last December's campaign on hygiene to battle the AH1N1 virus you might want to check the difference between now and the Middle Ages. Brushing your teeth to give a minty fresh aroma when words of wisdom fall from your mouth is today's way of proper hygiene but in the medieval times, they had different ways to take care of themselves and, by the way, forget about bathrooms and privacy.

Mrs. Paquette's French class has prepared posters to let you know what was going on in those days. You might be surprised at what you will learn.

A New Year ...

A new year has started and I'm not into resolutions or making promises but, I'm willing to give it a try and I will choose only things that I'm sure I'll be able to handle like:

1. I will smile at least once a day. My face muscles need it.

2. I will check the sky everyday. It is way more accurate than any weather forecast .
3. I will not run down the stairs in socks. Way too slippery!

4. I will only eat when I'm hungry. (Well, this one might be tough...)
That was not too bad and the odds are in my favor on this. So, if you are feeling that you need to make drastic life changing habits, do it but remember to be easy on yourself and the most valuable advice I can give you is KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. If you say it out loud, you will have "nice" people around commenting on your handling of those resolutions. Nobody is perfect but aiming to be is just as good as getting to be.

Happy Holidays to all of you! Try to have fun with people you care about. If you are not in that jolly spirit mood, do only things that mean a lot to you. My advice for this time of the year is to find something to laugh or smile about everyday. Trust me, if you look around with a keen eye, you'll find some really stupid stuff going around that are full of humor. In any case, Dale and I will see you back in January and we hope great things come your way.

I know that it's still a little early to start the caroling but I can't help feeling happy about the upcoming Christmas celebrations. It seems that I'll get to see everybody that matters and just sharing a good meal with them while chatting "live" instead of via e-mail or whatever else is available on the market will add to the pleasure. This is my message for this week: go see your friends or have them over, catch a movie either in a theater or a video rental or even just the regular TV movie that will be free on cable. Just do it! Reach out and have fun!
As usual, we made our Christmas and our Holiday trees in the library. Our theme for this year Holiday tree is music. You should have music in your life to bring you joy. Christmas songs might not be your cup of tea but find music that makes you feel good and it will become your Holiday's favorites for years to come.

Next week, we might have a special activiy during lunch hour either on Monday or Tuesday.

20th anniversary of the Children's Treaty

On November 20th, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Children's Treaty. You would think that this treaty would be enough to prevent any more child slavery in any form but the picture at the top shows two children that won't go to school, that won't get an education, that won't ever have a choice as to the kind of life they want to have. If you think that this happened a long time ago, it hasn't. This picture was taken on November 4th, 2009 in an Afghanistan brick factory. You might think that this is an exceptional situation, it isn't. As mentioned on the SOS Children's Village Organization website, 5,7 million children are working with barely any remuneration and in very poor conditions. Stop by the library and have a look at the different books on child labor and child soldiers on display. We also put out some informations on the Children's Bill of Rights that kids from 7 countries put together in 1996. If you think you can't make a difference, just look at the works of Craig Kielburger.

Remembrance Day ... Our history ... Our freedom ...

November always brings a kind of nostalgia and melancholy with the shortened days and lack of sun's warmth. It is also the time to give thanks to those who sacrified their lives to let us enjoy our freedom, our peace. If you check your family tree, you probably will find someone who left their loved ones to help strangers regain their countries, their families, their human rights.

Please take time to look around you and appreciate all you take for granted. If you have the chance to know a veteran, talk to that person. There is nothing like the story of someone who was there and lived it! This might prove to be one of the richest experience you will remember and it is way better to hear about it than to read about it.

Thanks to Mr. Newman for the Power Point on Normandia and to the Army, Navy, Air Force Unit 318 (the Hut) for the loan of the "Support our troops" yellow ribbons for our display. The newspapers, postcards, bookmarks on the table were provided by the Canadian Veterans Association. Take one home and share the information.

Fortune telling by Madame Courtney

Wow! Madame Courtney, our fortune teller left right after lunch and her predictions have yet to come through ... or not! Don't worry, if she predicted an horrible death or a terrible broken heart, sleep tight and tomorrow will be a better day. Halloween

Halloween is coming fast! Don't forget to wear your costume on Friday and to come to the library to check out the "horror" corner that some students are putting up. On your way there, take a look at the books on the display table in the entrance. (Thanks to Sabrina Crook and Jessie Keeble for their artistic talents.)

We tried for a little variety for a change! Many of you were not born when Anne Rice wrote her famous Vampires Chronicles Series. Today, when we think of horror or vampires, the first names to come to mind are Stephenie Meyer, Stephen King or Darren Shan but Anne Rice was already a well known author before the Twilight books or the Cirque du freak Series arrived on our shelves. As for Stephen King, you might say he was already someone in the literary world at the time but Anne Rice was as well known. If you have the opportunity, read "Interview with the vampire" and then, rent the movie adapted from the book. It is always a good idea to read the book before seeing the movie because, our imagination might bring us to a very different world.

Dragons, dragons ...

Dragons exercise a very vast array of pictures in our minds. From books to movies, it seems that the interest we have in them never decreases. With time, you might think that as adults they cease to have a magic hold on our imaginations but this is not the case ... for me anyway. When there's a book on dragons, I have to read it. If there's a movie about dragons, I have to see it. Even when my kids were playing video games with dragons, I was there, looking at them go through castles, mountains, battlefields as if I was checking a movie out. In our library, we have several good series about dragons and there are wonderful websites with infos on their authors. For example, you can get acquainted with the dragons in Chris D'Lacey 's tetralogy (soon to be a pentalogy because "Dark Fire" is coming in April) or in Christopher Paolini's trilogy. Of course, we wouldn't want to forget James A. Owen's adventures.

You might wonder what tetralogy or pentalogy means. If tri means 3, tetra is 4 and penta is 5. We could explore this subject further but, for now, I'll let you come and check my dragons in the library. Also, do you know where you could find this phrase "Hic sunt dracones"?

Reading Challenge, the third year.

This is October. Leaves start to change colors, clouds seem to stay a little longer and Halloween will put a close to the month. In the library, October means that an important activity will start on the first day of the month: the READING CHALLENGE. This will be our third year and we hope to give more prizes than before. For those of you who haven't heard of it, let's just say that all you have to do is read, keep track of the books on a sheet at the frontdesk in the library and that's all you have to do. Thanks to our sponsors, last year we were able to have weekly draws for students to win participation prizes. Also, all participants that did not win in the draws received a participation memento. All together, we gave prizes to 110 students.

Of course, it is still a kind of competition and we tally the number of pages read and we will have special prizes for the top readers (3 boys and 3 girls) but also, we will still have a random draw for a boy and a girl to win a prize of the same value as those top readers. We have two forms this year: blue for books and yellow for manga and graphic novels. This will enable us to prepare special participation prizes. Don't worry, reading doesn't hurt and you get better at it the more you do it. Last year, we had two winners that read under 500 pages. We had many students who read a few pages everyweek and read for less than 200 pages but they still got a prize at the end. So you see, there are no excuse for not registering in the READING CHALLENGE.

Feeling like an alien?

Hello everybody,

I know it has been a while since you received news from the library but now that I have a few minutes to spare, I'll bring you up to date. First, Dale will be back on October 5th. For those that do not already know, his wife gave birth to a beautiful little girl in August and this is the reason for his absence. We posted Kara's picture at the front desk of the library if you want to have a peek. I would like to thank everybody for their comprehension for the limited access provided at the library. It is a bit wild at the moment but thanks to Mrs. Baril for her help during lunch hour. If she was not giving a hand, we would have to close the library for the whole lunch hour.

The first display of the year in the library is about feeling like an alien. Coming to High School might make you feel as if you were coming from another world, planet, galaxy. Even returning from a great summer, you might notice that changes happened while you were away and that you need some time to adapt. Feeling out of place is not uncommon but there are tools to help you. Of course, I put on some very interesting books on display and I invite you to check them out. If you need to talk, Student Services personnel is available for you. Please take advantage of those resources.

Close to our hearts

Spring is finally here and it feels so nice to breathe in that life
force that makes nature develop its splendors.

Some people wished they could spring back to health as nature does.
Resilience is a strong trait in our survival kit but sometimes, we need
the help of friends and family to get through rough patches. Cancer is
one of those illnesses that will touch most everybody in their
lifetime. This illness is non-discriminatory and affects people of all
ages, races, religions, etc. This week, some students from Mrs. Comeau
and Mrs. Murphy's classes wanted to reach out and help out someone they
know. To show support, they are helping to prepare a display and will
be selling bracelets to raise funds to give to the Canadian
Cancer Society.

Gaudi, Rodia and more

It is widely known that beauty helps to soothe the soul. You have a
chance to do it for yourself by coming to the library to admire the
works of students from Mrs. Blampied's class.

If ever you visit Los Angeles, you might be tempted to check out the Watts
Towers by Rodia or if ever you happen to be in Barcelona, the Sagrada Familia by Gaudi really merits the detour.

From the students' display, you will recognize some of the inspiration.

As for some abstract art, colorful items can be admired too. Don't be
shy and come have a look! They have a 3-D quality that is impressive from up close.

Montreal Canadiens

Yes, the Montreal Canadiens are celebrating their 100th anniversary!
You might think that they are not doing so well in the playoffs but,
you have to admire the history of the team. Come to the library and
have a look at our different displays.

You will see Stanley Cups made by students from Ms. Blampied's class
along with many new books on hockey history, not only on the Canadiens.
I have a little "coup de coeur" for the Zamboni book.

We have some memorabilia in our glass display case that was provided by Mr. Scott Coates and Mr. Bob Halsall. On Friday, some autographed items by Jean Béliveau will be part of a participation draw. You have to be there!

We will have guests coming to talk with you so check the Student Bulletin. Mr. Coates who knows pretty much everything there is to know about the Canadiens and is an expert on memorabilia will be there for you. Try to stomp him with your questions on Friday at lunch hour. Another great guest will be there to chat with you, Mr. Vincent Riendeau. He was a great goalie in the NHL and will be available to discuss and exchange opinions with you about hockey. Lunch and Twilight

Yes, it is fun to read and gather together around the same book! We had our special activity in the library on Wednesday before the Easter break and it was great. Everybody brought their lunch to eat while watching the movie. Prizes were given and everybody got a "Breaking Dawn" pin and stickers from the Twilight series. We have to thank the Brome Lake Bookstore for many of the prizes that were given that day. Our winners were: Bianca Lévesque (Eclipse Book), Vanessa Barnes (DVD), Megan Beaulieu (T-shirt), Sabrina Goulet & Marie-Sophie Grondin (Bookmarks) and Victoria Aiken (Stephenie Meyer CD). What a history!!

Mrs. Paquette's class presents their researches on the different autochtone groups that are part of Canadian history. Please feel free to come to the library to see them.

Spring is finally here and we invite you to visit your friendly neighborhood museums. At the University of Sherbrooke, you can check out urban projects with the Art Metropole exhibit. This is free. Of course, it is quite unconventional but you have to broaden your horizons.

In Coaticook, at the Beaulne Museum, you really must see the Soldiers of Peace. This project was elaborated by Claude Desjardins. From the discovery of the army of clay soldiers in China, she decided to balance the energies of the world by creating her Soldiers of peace project. You have to see it while it is in our area. You should visit the Museum website to read more about it at http://www.museebeaulne.qc.ca/exposition.php?id=18&lang=en . You might recognize an ancient Galt student on their opening page. Also, on your way back to town, you must stop for ice cream at the Laiterie Coaticook. This is one of the finest products our region offers. So many flavors to chose from! Let's indulge!

At the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Sherbrooke, until May 31st, you can get to know a little more about the Eastern Townships artists. (and at such a small price)

You have to make a detour through the library to check the wonderful art projects done by the level 4 and 5 students from Ms. Blampied's and Mrs. Hirshfeld's (better known as Mrs. Gandey) classes. The wire sculptures that show different actions were first drawn then sculpted. They are a good example of the wide range of interests of our students and also of a beautiful line of expression.

You should see the amazing works provided by Mrs. Bishop's class on World War I poetry and Mrs. Brown's class on the novel "Flowers for Algernon". Aquarelles, pictures, antiqued documents and maquettes are there for your enjoyment. Take a detour through the library during recess or lunch, it is worth the trip!

International Year of Astronomy

This year, you will have a chance to learn more about our Universe. The International Year of Astronomy (IYA) 2009 has been initiated by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO. At the moment, we are so preoccupied by the environment that we tend to forget that there is something out there. The solar system is huge and we know just a little bit more about it everyday. Please visit the official website of the IYA at http://www.astronomy2009.org/ . If ever you get a chance to visit the planetarium in Montreal or the observatory on Mount Megantic, take it ... you will really have an incredible experience.

In the meanwhile, stop by the library to get a little feel for the Universe. We have some projects made by students (Mr. Rivard's class) and you will get impressed by the quality of their work.

Yes, we are all curious about the future. Would we feel better if we knew exactly what was going to happen? Of course, the meteorologist should always exactly forecast the weather. If he makes a mistake, we usually shouldn't die from it but, if the fortune teller tells you not to cross the street in front of your house between 5 and 6 on Friday afternoon, what would you do? Listen to her and barricade yourself in your house? Call a friend to keep you company and force you to stay put until 6:01? Not bother?

Twilight Fan Club Activity

Last October 31st, the Twilight Fan Club met to exchange and share their opinions about the book and the upcoming movie. Special prizes were won by the participants and treats were offered to the 32 participants. We would like to thank Valérie Boutin and Jonyca Lacroix for the posters, activity planning and the time they put in to make it a success. We would also like to thank the community service students who decorated the Green Corner to give it a festive glowing atmosphere (Donald Brouillard, Mélodie Poulin, Laurie Tanguay, Geneviève Martineau, Krystina Lahaie). Without their creativity, the room wouldn't have felt so festive. Too bad the pictures with the participants were lost! (My fault....Soooooo Sorry!!!)

Fur trade in Canada

This week, we changed the display but kept the canoe to help you discover Fur Trade in Canada. We also selected a few books that will give you an insight into Indian legends and myths. You might be surprise to see the books we selected for you.

The Reading Challenge is back!

The Reading Challenge started on October 1st. If you haven't register yet, come to the library and do it. Last year, 76 students won prizes by participating in the Reading Challenge. The weekly participation draws will start in February and the big winners will be announced in May.

We know that for some students, it is not an easy task to read a book and this is why all the persons involved in the Reading Challenge opted for participation draws so everybody gets a chance at winning something. Hey! Your chances are way better than if you would buy a lotery ticket (Sorry! You're not old enough to do it but you understand what I mean!).

You can read fiction or non-fiction books. Just keep track of the number of pages and write it down on your registration sheet in the library.

We took the opportunity of the presence of a canoe in the library to help you discover the Maritimes and one of its most famous authors, Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Who doesn't know Anne of Green Gables? This year, we celebrated her 100th anniversary. Come to the library to check other books written by Mrs. Montgomery or read her biography.

We would like to thank Mr. Rivard for the loan of memorabilia that adds to this display.
